At Cotton Patch there are three basic way to prospect for gold.
Panning, Magic Spiral Wheels and Sluicing & Hibanking..

Panning:
Cotton Patches has many stand up
panning water troughs for panning.

Magic Spiral Wheels:
Rent a Gold Magic Spiral Wheels.
Then slowly scoop in the material.
The Magic Wheel do the work by spinning.
The Gold collects in the center of the wheel.

Sluicing & Hibanking:
You can reserve a spot on the creek and take prospecting
to the next level and it’s easy to learn.

located in the southwestern area of Montana.
24 miles Southwest of Dillon MT.
I-15 to exit 59, Highway 278 to Bannack Bench Road, then south four miles.

The Visitor Center is open seven days a week. Summer Hours 10:00am to 6:00pm.

Gold Panning at Bannack State Park takes place weekends in the summer season,
3:00PM to 4:30PM and only in the water tubs provided at the park.
Panning is not permitted elsewhere in Bannack State Park.
The "pay dirt" comes from the river basin on Grasshopper Creek. Dirt, water, shovel, screens, and pans are all provided from the park and you get to keep the Gold you find.

Rates: (Montana residence get free entrance)

Bicyclists or Walk-ins: $1.00/person
Commercial/Bus Passengers: $2.00/Person

Bannack has two campgrounds. First-come, first-served basis.

When camping at Camp Dakota, Panning for gold is only $4.00. Camp Dakota will provide the Pay Dirt from Lucky Strike Mine. Beside Gold the pay dirt may include, jasper, jade, amethyst, rose quartz, crystals, turquoise, tiger eye, snowflake obsidian, arrowheads, and more. Camp Dakota will also provide a pan and teach you panning techniques.

Bearfoot gold, is a by Appointment only, prospecting camp.
With a limited capacity of about 10 prospectors a day.
You will have to make an appointment in advance.

Daily Park Hours 8:00 AM to Sunset
Day-use fee is $5 per vehicle.

In Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park, recreational
gold panning is allowed on the east shore of the American river by
the Mt. Murphy Road bridge across from the park museum. At the
parks museum/visitor center there is a short instructional video.
There are also how to pamphlets available at the visitor center.


Bekeart's Gun Shop (10:00am – 4:00pm), just across the bridge
from the gold panning area, features gold pan rentals.
Bekeart’s also provides hands on gold panning instructions
and sell bags of pay dirt for panning using the water flume
at their store.


There are no campsites in the park, however, the nearby Coloma
and Lotus communities include a number of private campgrounds and stores.
